I've also been doing therapy in Tallassee where I only get 30 visits a year. We have found a stationary arm bike that cost $2,500 dollars that I desparatly need for therapy at home. I have a C-5 injury but my triceps are starting to fire which are a C-7 level. Check out the different gaggets on this site http://restorative-therapies.com/products. I have the bicycle I try to average 3 days a week on it and the handcrank bike attaches on top of the e-stem bike.

Bruce Vermeulen,
Sorry that it took so long to get this e-mail to you we’ve been going back and forth to the doctors offices for both me and dad. I have 3 kidney stones 2 are in the left kidney, but the doctor said they are because that was the one they did surgery on over thanksgiving last year and you can see scaring damage on the x-ray and their afraid if they mess with it I might lose it. I have a shock wave surgery date of July 6, to hopefully break up the stone that is in the right side. Dad has had an ear infection plus; fluid behind the ear which is causing it to ring.
We are down to the last few things to having my room finished. The only thing left that we have to pay for is the trim. It is going to cost us about $350 dollars. Dad also has to repaint the bathroom ceiling and do some touch up painting to the ceiling in my bedroom. We also have to finish priming the back half of the house. Then we have to paint and trim the entire house so that will cost about $500 dollars.
First, off I would like to thank everyone for all their donations and prayers that has helped us in the past 5 years in our families’ darkest time. Then to finish this letter off I would like to thank the Rider down Association for all the help and prayers you have said for me, because now I feel they are all paying off. I am currently going to physical therapy 3 days a week and riding me F.E.S bike 2 days a week. I hope to start college this fall and all this wouldn’t be possible without the all the people who believed in me. If you would like to make a donation visit the make a donation place on this website.
Thanks Sincerely,
Chase and Johnny Borders

Chase has spent a good bit of the last year going in and out of Dr's offices and hospitals. Most of these epidsodes revolved around a variety of infections that left Chase weakened with respiratory and other problems. Tests at the Shepherd Ceter in Atlanta revealed earlier this year that Chase's kidneys were filled with infected kindey stones. His gall bladder likewise was heavily infected. After having four 8mm kidney stones removed during Thanksgiving, he had another surgery over the Christmas holiday to get a stone that had virtually filled entire left kidney. Just last Thursday (May 12th) Chase had yet another surgery, this time to remove his infected gall bladder. This last surgry was perfomed at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama. Chase and Johnny are excited to have found a medical home at the EAMC - as having the right mix of Doctors and resources fairly close to home will make they're life somewhat easier.
March 14th, 2010
Chase went in for a fairly routine surgery Friday in Atlanta to open up one of his arms – which was supposed to pave the way for him to regain a lot of the use of his arms. Instead he spent most of the weekend in a near comatose state after having what appears to have been a severe allergic reaction to pain medication early Saturday morning.
After getting an oral pain medication at about 4am Saturday, Chase became unresponsive and started displaying stroke-like symptoms. When asked his name he would say “Jonathan Chase Borders.” When asked his birth date he would say “Jonathan Chase Borders.” Pretty much he wasn’t talking much at all and didn’t respond to most questions.
X-rays of his lungs didn’t look good to the Piedmont Hospital medical staff – they suspected pneumonia. At one point his blood pressure dropped to 65 over 35. He also developed a rash and his white blood cell count started going up and his oxygen sats went down slightly. They were also checking for a blood clot in his lungs.
It was familiar ground for Johnny. No sleep for days, frustrated and scared to death that he was going to lose Chase. About 30 minutes ago we were getting ready to load up and head to Atlanta when Johnny called. We had talked at mid-night last night and earlier this morning. It didn’t look good. Chase was still largely unresponsive and they were getting ready to do a CT-scan of his brain – thinking that he may have had a stroke.
Then I got a call from Johnny. When I answered the phone he was choked up – almost crying. He said I’m talking to the doctor, then his voice broke up and he said “here”. I thought maybe he was going to put the Dr. on the phone. Instead I heard a weak, but very familiar voice say “Tom, the doctor said I’m going to be OK.” I can’t tell you how good it was to hear his voice.
Molly Hatchet (for the older crowd) had a song called “Beatin’ the Odds”. Maybe that needs to be Chase’s theme song. This kid’s ability to survive is unlike anything I have ever seen.
They are going to continue doing some tests – as he has some kind of infection and is getting heavy doses of the strongest antibiotics - but what looked like a tragedy two hours ago has suddenly taken a huge turn in the right direction.
For those who have followed Chase, this is pretty standard stuff. For any mere mortal, it would have been lights out a long time ago.
Chase – you scared the crap out of us – yet again. Glad you’re doing better man!
Chase is in bed 8 on the 5th floor Immediate Care Unit of Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Barring any other complications, he will get to go home tomorrow to start rehabbing his newly opened arm.
If you would like to send good wishes his way, click on the “Contact Us” link to send him an e-mail. Please keep Chase and Johnny in your thoughts are prayers.
Regards,
Tom B.

Normally when Chase is in Atlanta, it's because he's at the Shepherd Center for therapy or some sort of operation or procedure.
But once a year he gets to enjoy the sport he loves while in the ATL. Last night he was fortunate enough to run in Mitch Payton of Pro Ciruit fame. Mitch was incredibly gracious and quick to agree to getting a picture with Chase.
We already have a framed copy for Chase's room!
Thanks Mitch! Oh yea, congrats on that French guy getting the win. Dean Wilson was awesome too!
Chase had a great time. Now he's ready to start a series of medical procedures over the coming weeks that will we hope set him up for great things in 2010!

Sunday afternoon after the Atlanta Supercross, Trey Gafford snapped this photo of Chase doing what he does best - sharing some good bench racing with fellow riders. Here, Chase visits with one of the many young riders present at Monster Mountain last Sunday.

In a few weeks my Dad and I will be off to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta to start a process that I hope, down the road, will lead to me regaining a lot of my range of motion and alot more use of my hands and arms.
They are going to do surgeries on my arms to "release" the tendons and allow them to open up again. That will be followed by a tremendous amount of hard work on my part rehabbing my hands and arms. Then more work learning how to use the new mobility.
We're hoping that not long after the arm surgeries, I will have a surgery to remove my trach. This will help me breath easier and get stronger. I can't wait for that!
I guess that's all the news for now. Once we get my blog fully populated with all the posts from when I was at UAB, we'll start using it for regular updates. For now we'll add late breaking news on this page.

Now you can follow Chase and see what he's up no matter where he's at. Check out his tweets at:

Courtney Davies from Oh Crop Photography sent several awesome shots of Chase at Deer Run MX - one of the many great tracks in Alabama. This one captures perfectly what you might see on any given weekend - Chase monitoring Johnny's on-track performance. He loves watching Dad ride - and is quick to give him grief when he doesn't live up to Chase's expectations!
We'll post the other shots in a new photos section soon.

Melissa Edwards became one of Chase's international fans after reading about his devasting injury on a motocross forum. Her husband Dean is a motocrosser and they were deeply moved by Chase's story and his courageous fight when ARDS threatened to take his life. Like many, Melissa followed his struggles almost daily. She and her family, of course, had to have the first "Chase Borders" t-shirts on the continent (literally) and soon her children were sporting their "Race for Chase" t-shirts in Australia! Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference in the world - especially when they come from a world away.
Melissa's son Baily recently turned four years old. You'll never guess what he got for his birthday? Oh yea - and check out the shirt! Melissa, your thoughts and prayers and those of your family mean more than you could ever know.
Thank you to everyone - where ever you are for thinking of and praying for Chase. He is still here, and still fighting because of you!
Move over Chad Reed! The next big Aussie talent in on the way! "Bailey Edwards" - it even sounds like a Grand Prix star's name.....
