Within days of his crash, Chase developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome or "ARDS." None of us new what ARDs was. One trip to the internet and a meeting with the doctors told us all needed to know.... Chase was not only paralyzed and had a badly broken leg, he was now locked in a battle for life itself. ARDS kills 6 of 10 patients who contract it - and many who were not suffering from critical injuries.
Chase's courageous struggle and the steadfast love of a father who refused to quit on his son became a story almost like no other. Thousands of motocrossers and people who knew almost nothing about motocross became daily readers and followers of Chase's story on motocross forums. The primary forum was hosted by www.jmrpowersports.com a small motorcycle shop out of north Alabama. The Holt family from JMR, like many others were crushed that Chase had been critically injured the day after graduating from Tallassee High School. Their contribution was posting the "Chase Borders" thread on jmrpowersport.com.
Others contributed any and every way possible. The most important support came from the thousands of daily prayers for Chase - he surely would not have lived through this ordeal or would Johnny have survived without the outpouring of love and spiritual support from all over the motocross world.
